A feast for all the senses, An Evening Uncorked!will fill the spacious Pawtucket Armory with aromas, colors, sounds, and tastes of an appetizing "foodie" adventure, with wine tasting for the novice, the enthusiast, and the connoisseur. Where else can one sample foods from these great chefs all under one roof?

This year's small bites will be prepared by returning participants, including chefs from The Capital Grille, Chapel Grille, David Burke Prime Steakhouse, The Dorrance, Eleven Forty Nine Restaurant, Just Ellen's Inc., Luigi's Restaurant and Gourmet Express, Matunuck Oyster Bar, and Pot Au Feu. Guests can also enjoy delectable samples from this year's newest contributors, Bluefin Grille, the Coast Guard House, and Red Fez, with desserts by Corner Bakery Café and The Inside Scoop. Food + Wine + America's Test Kitchen = Fun!

Join us April 12 at 7 p.m. for An Evening Uncorked!
Meet and mingle with America's Test Kitchen chefs Bridget Lancaster and Julia Collin Davison. We're so excited to have Bridget and Julia as our special guests! We also invite you raise a glass to Susan L. Farmer, WSBE general manager and president for 17 years. Susan's devotion to public television and Rhode Island PBS in particular is as legendary as her strand of pearls.

Of course, the evening revolves around the food and beverage stations that ring the spacious Pawtucket Armory Drill Hall (172 Exchange Street, in downtown Pawtucket, RI, near Pawtucket City Hall).

Chefs from 17 top food establishments will prepare small bites just for this event. Between the food stations, carefully chosen wines from leading domestic and international vineyards as well as private cellars will be poured for tasting. Two local craft breweries will also present their beers.

Don't miss the Smashing Photos booth to capture your fun time.

And tap your toes to the tunes of the Original Jelly Roll Soul.

The evening culminates in a lively live auction of select boutique and collectable wines, gifts, and novel dining and travel experiences. Silent auction will be open during the food and wine tasting.

Search is on for the Oldest Charles Krug Wine Bottle

I received this message this morning and found the idea of the bottle search fascinating. (In terms of marketing, it's a great idea!) The Charles Krug Winery / Peter Mondavi Family has been generous with WSBE Rhode Island PBS during our annual wine event, donating delicious wines over the years to help us raise programming funds. In fact, in the 2011 silent auction of An Evening Uncorked just this past February, there was a 3 Litre Charles Krug Generations, signed by Marc Mondavi and Peter Mondavi, Sr. Were you the high bidder?

So, on two levels - because you might have THE bottle the winery seeks among your other wine bottles, and because the winery has been a friend to WSBE Rhode Island PBS - I share this message and news release with you. Happy Thanksgiving!

With people pulling special bottles out for the holidays, we think someone might stumble across the oldest Charles Krug wine bottle in the world in the next few weeks.  If it happens, we want to know about it!

You may have seen the recent AP “Ghost Stories” article, which included Charles Krug Winery. [Editor's Note: I didn't see this story, but if you did and would like to tell us about it, please feel free to comment.] Old ghosts and old wine bottles are both part of the history of Charles Krug, which is Napa Valley’s oldest winery, founded in 1861. That was the year Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated and the Civil War began.

You’ll find details on our “oldest bottle” search, which goes through the end of the year, below. If you could share this with your audience, we would appreciate it.  We’re hoping for some great old finds.  Thanks much!

Christine

SEARCH FOR OLDEST CHARLES KRUG WINE BOTTLE ANNOUNCED
Bottle to be part of history exhibit at Napa Valley’s first winery

ST. HELENA, CA—In time for the 150th anniversary of Napa Valley’s first winery this year, the Peter Mondavi Sr. Family announces a search for the oldest Charles Krug Winery bottle in existence. Founded in 1861, Charles Krug Winery is the birthplace of the Napa Valley wine industry and has been in the Peter Mondavi Family for nearly 70 of its 150 years.

Peter Mondavi Jr. puts his family winery’s history in perspective: “Charles Krug was founded the year President Lincoln was inaugurated, and the year the Civil War began.” At the time, Napa Valley was essentially the Wild West. Charles Krug first planted Mission grapes on his St. Helena estate but he soon replanted to European varietals which he felt would make better wine. Wines made at the time would have likely included claret, sherry, Madeira, sweet tokay and riesling, the latter hugely popular with many of the German immigrant-winemakers in Napa Valley in the late 1800s.

Readers are encouraged to scour their wine cabinets, cellars, closets and caves for Charles Krug wine bottles, empty or full, dating either from pre-Prohibition or the Peter Mondavi Family era which began with the 1944 vintage.  Bottles deemed contenders will be authenticated by experts in the wine department of Sotheby’s auction house in New York. The Peter Mondavi Family may purchase the winning bottle for display at the winery.

Plans are for an exhibit of historic artifacts from Charles Krug Winery, which will include a towering 9000-gallon vintage redwood fermentation tank and Charles Krug’s original basket press, which he used to crush the first harvest at his fledgling winery. The estate’s Redwood Cellar will house the exhibit. The huge structure with its many-gabled roof and impressive belvedere was built by Charles Krug in 1873 after his original cellar burned to the ground. On the National Register of Historic Places and a California Historic Landmark, the Redwood Cellar was restored recently to hold the Peter Mondavi Family’s reserve barrel aging room. The Cellar will eventually house the winery’s new tasting room and visitor’s center with construction beginning in early 2012.

To submit an entry, please visit Charles Krug on Facebook and tell us about your bottle and post a photo, or email it to oldestbottle@charleskrug.com by December 31, 2011. Contenders for the oldest bottle will be contacted with next steps.

Charles Krug Winery’s 150-year history traces the transformation of the Napa Valley from “Wild West” to Wine Country destination. With a legacy of nearly 70 years at Charles Krug, the Peter Mondavi Family is dedicated to ecological stewardship in order to preserve the land for their children and future generations. Those efforts to steward the land and preserve the winery's historical legacy are earning new respect for a family long identified with California wine. To learn more about Charles Krug Winery and the vision of the Peter Mondavi Family, visit Charles Krug Winery online.

Perfect Pairings of Food and Wine Amid Lush Flowering Tropical Plants - It's An Evening Uncorked!

MARCH 23 Update: Here's a slideshow of the festivities.

After the latest spate of snowy weather, frigid temperatures, and biting cold winds, a tropical getaway to warmer surroundings sounds pretty inviting, doesn't it?

On March 19, wine lovers are invited to get away to the tropics – without ever leaving Rhode Island.

That's the bonus of attending this year's An Evening Uncorked!, the annual food and wine event to benefit WSBE Rhode Island PBS. This year's gala will take place in New England's largest indoor garden, the Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park, on Saturday, March 19, at 7 p.m.

Amid lush exotic flowers and trees, chefs from some of Rhode Island’s top restaurants will prepare tasting-sized portions of dishes that will be paired with just the right wine to complement the flavors. Participating restaurants include: Blaze, Capital Grille, Fireworks Catering, Harry's Bar & Burger, Nick's on Broadway, The Ocean House, Perro Salado, and Pot au FeuMS Walker will provide the international wines.

An Evening Uncorked! will also feature a silent auction and a traditionally lively live auction of classic and cult wines. [Partial list attached.] The fund raising event is co-chaired by Aldo Cipriano, Gary Light, and Greg Mitrakas. Committee members include Ivan Colon, James Leach, Karla Little, Ann Martini, and Len Penagio. Committee members come from diverse walks of life, but share a common passion for wines and wine collecting. The group is also enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge about various wines. The energy, ideas and discussions – and the donations that come in as a result – set An Evening Uncorked! apart from other local wine auctions. Most of the bottles we offer just can’t be found in your local wine shop.

Donations come from private wine collectors, as well as local retailers, and restaurants. Non-wine auction items include gift baskets, hotel stays, and restaurant gift certificates. Auctioneer Richard J. Conti of Conti Estates, Auctions, & Appraisals in Attleboro, will keep the bidding lively and exciting.

Tickets to the gala are $125 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 401-222-3636, extension 327, or online at www.ripbs.org. The popular event has sold out in past years; guests are encouraged to buy tickets early to avoid disappointment. Guests must be 21 years of age or older to attend. Cocktail attire is appropriate. Support for An Evening Uncorked! is provided by Gencorp Insurance Group, and Adler Pollock & Sheehan, PC. All proceeds benefit programming at WSBE Rhode Island PBS.

Cult Wines
8 bottles of 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon (Value: $750)

  • 94 points Robert Parker: "The dark ruby-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon has a nose reminiscent of a blackberry-flavored Yoplait yogurt laced with roasted oak and hints of licorice. A full-bodied wine of power and structure, it is crammed with black currants, blackberries, and spices. Its dense fruit is matched blow for blow with a muscular, firm structure. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020." (12/02)
  • 93 points Wine Spectator: "Announces itself as a serious red from the first whiff of earthy, smoky notes weaving through the licorice-scented dark berry flavors. This firm, chewy wine expands on the long finish under a layer of fine-grained tannins, holding it all together seamlessly. It begs for time in the cellar to develop. Best after 2006." (09/03)
  • 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Aromas of crystallized dark berries, tobacco, mocha, peat, graphite and smoky, spicy oak. Very rich and dense but not overly sweet, with strong oak notes of spice and chocolate along with suggestions of pipe tobacco and fresh herbs. Finishes with ripe, chocolatey tannins and excellent length."
