Tonight, World TV Premiere of New England Legends Maritime Mysteries

(l -r) Nate, Tony and Jeff
In just a few hours, Jeff Belanger and Tony Dunne will be in Rhode Island PBS studios to present their Emmy-nominated series, New England Legends, including the world television premiere of the latest episode, "Maritime Mysteries." We're very excited to welcome Jeff and Tony to our studio! Tune in starting at 8 p.m. for all three episodes (scroll down for descriptions of the episodes). Then, wrap your night of fascinating "tales from the fringe" with Haunted RI: The Legends of Dolly Cole at 10 p.m. Great night of TV on Rhode Island PBS!

In the meantime while you wait for 8 p.m. to arrive, listen in to this interview of Jeff by Tim Weisberg of WBSM 1420 AM on Saturday Morning with Tim Weisberg.

"The Spooky Berkshires" examines the tragic history of the Houghton Mansion in North Adams, Massachusetts, and its century-old haunting, then heads up to October Mountain in the Berkshires to chase down stories of Bigfoot sightings, UFOs, and the ghost of a young girl said to haunt an abandoned cemetery somewhere deep in the woods. In 2014, "The Spooky Berkshires" was nominated for an Emmy under the "Magazine Program/Special" category.

The second episode,"Mysteries in Stone," takes viewers north of Boston to a 4,000-year-old calendar in Salem, New Hampshire dubbed "America’s Stonehenge," before heading south to Lynn Woods on Boston's North Shore to explore tales of pirates, buried treasure, and a man who spent his life tunneling through solid rock because spirits told him he'd find gold.

The newest episode, "Maritime Mysteries," dives into the ocean waters of southeastern New England to explore the lonely and haunted Rose Island Lighthouse off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island. Then viewers head to shore to ponder an ancient and mysterious stone tower with possible connections to the Knights Templar. Finally, the crew trek up to New Bedford, Massachusetts, to investigate the haunts of abandoned Fort Taber / Fort Rodman.

"This isn't a ghost-hunting show," said Host and Executive Producer Jeff Belanger. "Legends are living, breathing things. They define our communities as much as the buildings or the people who came before us. New England Legends will explore those tales from the fringe that make living in New England that much more interesting. We’re thrilled to share these important stories with viewers of Rhode Island PBS."

New England Legends is a joint venture between Jeff Belanger and Tony Dunne. The two have been working together since 2009 when Dunne wrote and produced the documentary Things That Go Bump in the Night: Tales of Haunted New England for PBS. Belanger was featured prominently in that first documentary, which went on to national acclaim.

"To earn an Emmy nomination on our very first episode was a huge honor," said Director and Executive Producer Tony Dunne. "'Maritime Mysteries' takes this series to a higher level with even better story-telling, camera work, and editing. We want to show New Englanders the mysteries that many walk by every day without noticing."

Belanger and Dunne are currently working on future episodes of New England Legends and are actively seeking sponsorship to turn the program into a regular feature across more New England PBS affiliates.

Jeff Belanger hosts the latest New England Legends on Rhode Island PBS

(l -r) Nate, Tony and Jeff

New England is full of ghosts, monsters, and other mysteries that are more than just campfire tales. These legends and lore are as much a part of New England history as are the famous ancestors whose names grace our towns and schools today.

On Wednesday, October 29, starting at 8 p.m., Rhode Island PBS will broadcast the New England Legends series featuring the latest episode, “Maritime Mysteries.” This will be the first broadcast of the new episode and airs as part of our autumn fundraising drive. New England Legends host Jeff Belanger will be live in the studio for the event.

Legend of Sleepy Hollow airs Halloween Night

First written in 1820 as part of author Washington Irving's The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has alternately been called "a classic of American literature" and "The Great American Ghost Story."

Just in time for Halloween, a new half-hour film adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by documentary filmmaker Jim Ormond features a storyteller using Irving's authentic language from the 1820 tale. With a spooky aura, the thrilling chase of Ichabod Crane by the Headless Horseman, and quaint charm, this new production captures the spirit of the beloved classic. Rhode Island PBS airs The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at 10:30 p.m. on Halloween, October 31.

Filmmaker Ormond specializes in short films on local history. His recent releases have included Hudson River Brick Makers, which chronicled the rise and fall of the Hudson River brick industry and The Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden, which examined slavery in New York state from the founding of New Amsterdam in the 1600s up to 1840, when slavery was finally phased out in the state.

WWII Service of Former RI Governor Bruce Sundlun is "Above and Beyond"

Years before he became Rhode Island's 71st governor, Bruce G. Sundlun experienced one of World War II's most dramatic escapes from behind enemy lines. Tim Gray Media and the World War II Foundation tell Sundlun's story in Above and Beyond: The Incredible Escape of Jewish-American B-17 Pilot Bruce Sundlun from Nazi-Occupied Europe in World War II. Filmed on location in Belgium, the documentary is narrated by Sundlun’s daughter, Kara, who traveled back to the village of Jabbeke in Belgium, to re-trace her father’s footsteps in World War II. Rhode Island PBS presents Above and Beyond both as part of our ongoing series of local documentaries, Rhode Island Stories, on Sunday, November 9 at 6 p.m., and as a prime time special on Monday, November 10 at 9 p.m.

During overseas active duty beginning in June 1943, Bruce Sundlun, a Jewish-American college student, served as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot in the England-based 384th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force at Grafton-Underwood Air Base. Sundlun’s plane, the Damn Yankee, was shot down over Nazi-occupied Jabbeke, Belgium on December 1, 1943, after being damaged by flak and attacked by German fighter planes following the bombing of Solingen, Germany. It was the “Yankee’s” 13th mission over Europe. Five of the crew were killed, four others captured by the Germans.

After being smuggled out of Belgium on stolen bicycles and hidden by Catholic priests, and after six months' time cooperating with the French Resistance under the code name Salamander, Bruce Sundlun made several attempts to enter neutral Spain in an effort to escape back to England. However, after deciding that there was too much danger of capture or loss in the snowy Pyrenees, Sundlun made his way - once again on stolen bicycles - north-eastward across France where he finally escaped into Switzerland.

Before escaping into Switzerland, Sundlun had once again engaged with the Maquis (French Resistance fighters) in acts of sabotage against German Army units.

Upon entering neutral Switzerland, Bruce Sundlun was recruited by Allen Dulles, working out of the U.S. Embassy in Bern to reenter France under the auspices of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to act as a spy and bombardment spotter for the Allied invasion of Marseilles (Southern France) in August 1944.

Following WWII, Bruce Sundlun became a very successful businessman, advisor to presidents and the 71st governor of the State of Rhode Island.

Ciao Italia's Mary Ann Esposito Cooks at The Flames of Hope During This Weekend's WaterFire

Too many of our viewers have been touched by breast cancer. Ten years ago, an organization emerged from the ashes of one family's ultimately tragic encounter with the disease. The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation started in tribute to the matriarch of the Gemma family in Rhode Island, and in hopes their efforts of outreach, information, and support would unite, uplift, and empower local women facing and conquering the disease.

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation planted seeds 10 years ago, and since then it has blossomed and expanded its impact in our community. Rhode Island PBS is proud to air the short documentaries produced by the Foundation, featuring stories of courage and impact. As part of our Rhode Island Stories series, we feature encore presentations of the stories on Sundays at 6 p.m. throughout October on Rhode Island PBS to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Each year the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation also organizes The Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™, a major event held in Station Park (across from the State House and Providence Place Mall) in downtown Providence. This year, the event takes place October 10-12. The three-day event—the largest of its kind in the Northeast— promotes breast cancer awareness and education and honors people living with breast cancer.

On Saturday, October 11 at 4 p.m., our very own celebrity chef Mary Ann Esposito will be on-hand conducting a cooking demonstration in the Rhode Island Kitchen and Bath Pavilion. Additionally, Flames of Hope-goers will have access to an exclusive meet and greet and book signing with Mary Ann.

Esposito, author of 12 cookbooks, is the creator and host of the nationally televised PBS series, Ciao Italia with Mary Ann Esposito™— the longest running cooking series in television history produced for the last 12 years right here at Rhode Island PBS. For more information visit www.ciaoitalia.com and facebook.com/maryannesposito.

On Friday, October 10, the event kicks off with the unveiling of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation’s 2015 ‘Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life’ Calendar at a special evening ceremony. The calendar features twelve individuals who have tested positive for the BRCA gene mutation, which increases the chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

On Saturday, October 11, “Celebration Village” at Station Park comes alive at 2 p.m. with education, support, and live entertainment. That evening, the captivating Illuminations of Life Ceremony will take place on the State House steps facing downtown Providence, concluding with a torch procession—considered to be the pinnacle of the three-day event—down to the Waterplace Basin during WaterFire Providence.

Musical performances at “Celebration Village” will kick-off with One Wild Night, a Bon Jovi Tribute Band at 3:30 p.m. The next performance, Kelsey Kaplan, will be at 7 p.m. Closing out the day of performances is The Joshua Tree, a U2 Tribute Band, at 9 p.m.

The celebration will conclude on Sunday with the Flames of Hope Run/Walk Series, made up of three races: the signature Gloria Gemma 5K presented by The Walking Company, Kids Fun Run presented by Macy’s, and Pink Pump Palooza presented by Nordstrom’s. Registration for all three races is open today at www.flamesofhoperi.com.

For more information and the complete schedule of the October 10-12 Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™, visit www.gloriagemma.org and facebook.com/GloriaGemma.
