No Hero in Heroin

**UPDATE** Scroll down to see the program in its entirety.

On Thursday, April 3, at 9 p.m., Rhode Island PBS takes a hard look at what Rhode Island health officials are calling an epidemic: the skyrocketing deaths by heroin overdose.

No Hero in Heroin presents a spectrum of perspectives on the story. Health officials, addiction counselors, recovering addicts, and family members put the intimate, human faces on the startling statistics. As of this writing, there have been 69 overdose deaths in Rhode Island since January 1, more than twice as many as last year.

What may be most surprising about this story is who is dying - and the profile might not be what you expect. Addiction too often begins with prescription drugs taken to soothe legitimate injury or pain. Opioids - most notably Oxycodone - are popular pain killers and are safe and effective on a short-term basis. But pain sufferers who take them for an extended period can become addicted. Some soon opt for the lower cost and wider availability of illicit drugs like heroin. These addicts are our neighbors, work colleagues, family members, or friends.

Produced by WSBE Rhode Island PBS and hosted by Margie O'Brien, No Hero in Heroin will include filmed segments and in-studio discussions. Panelists will be Dr. Michael Fine, director of the RI Department of Health; Fred Trepassi, director of Phoenix House; Michelle McKenzie, director of the Prevent Overdose and Naloxone Intervention at Miriam Hospital; Steve Reid and Abbie Stenberg, former addicts; Jim Gillen, director of Anchor Recovery; Dr. Peter Friedmann, Lifespan Alcohol and Addiction Studies; Craig Stenning, Department of Behavioral Healthcare at the RI Department of Health; and Elise Reynolds, who lost two sons to overdose.

Off camera during the one-hour broadcast of No Hero in Heroin on April 3 only, addiction counselors will staff a phone bank in the Rhode Island PBS studios to answer viewers' questions about intervention and treatment referrals, and other addiction recovery information. Subsequent broadcasts will include referral phone numbers posted at the end of program.

"Through My Eyes" and "Hit and Run History" Debut on Rhode Island PBS

Beginning March 29, 2014, Rhode Island PBS begins broadcasting new episodes of the two travel series, Through My Eyes (TME) and Hit and Run History (HRH), both grassroots productions of the Cape Cod Community Media Center.

“In our last series, we followed Ava and Sofie, then ages 7 and 8, as they explored three cities in China,” explains TME director Jen Sexton. The elementary education travel series is specifically designed for classroom use. “Kids, parents, and teachers raved about them, and told us they wanted more.”

TME’s "Skipping School" was nominated for a New England Emmy in 2013. Offered the chance to accompany HRH to South America, the Cape Cod Travel Girls jumped at the chance. “To the City of Fair Winds,” TME’s first episode in the new series on Rhode Island PBS, introduces young viewers to the exciting capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires.

As “Gumshoe Historians,” the scrappy band of Hit and Run History has been following the story of the first American voyage ‘round the world. Less Ken Burns, and more of an adventure travel show, HRH’s exploits have taken them all over the Northeast and across to Cape Verde.

“Our style of storytelling lends itself to short-form serialization,” says HRH creator and host Andrew Buckley. “This is snackable history.”

Emmy-nominated "7,377 Miles from Home" opens HRH’s new series on Rhode Island PBS. In this episode, footage from two days of travel accompanies an interview with Samantha Addison of the Falklands Islands Radio Service, tracking from Cape Cod to New York, Chile and cross-country on East Falkland.

“We lead off with a clear picture of how remote and stark this place really is,” says Buckley.

Episodes are short - less than ten minutes in length – and will be scheduled between longer format programs as space permits throughout the schedule. To build continuity for the audience, Rhode Island PBS will regularly schedule the series on Saturday nights; Through My Eyes will air at 8:50 p.m. and Hit and Run History will air at 9:50 p.m.

Food + Wine + America's Test Kitchen = Fun!

Join us April 12 at 7 p.m. for An Evening Uncorked!
Meet and mingle with America's Test Kitchen chefs Bridget Lancaster and Julia Collin Davison. We're so excited to have Bridget and Julia as our special guests! Many of you tell us that America's Test Kitchen is one of your favorite shows, so here's a great chance to meet two of the show's chefs.

We also invite you raise a glass to Susan L. Farmer, WSBE general manager and president for 17 years. Susan's devotion to public television and Rhode Island PBS in particular is as legendary as her strand of pearls.

Of course, the evening revolves around the food and beverage stations that ring the spacious Pawtucket Armory Drill Hall (172 Exchange Street, in downtown Pawtucket, RI, near Pawtucket City Hall).

Chefs from 17 top food establishments will prepare small bites just for this event. Between the food stations, carefully chosen wines from leading domestic and international vineyards as well as private cellars will be poured for tasting. Two local craft breweries will also present their beers.

Truly a feast for all the senses, An Evening Uncorked! is a riot of colors, textures, aromas, flavors, and sounds, and wines to please the novice, the enthusiast, and the connoissuer. Where else can "foodies" savor dishes by all of these chefs and beverage purveyors under one roof?

The fun and frolic doesn't stop with food, wine, and public television celebrities. No, celebrities of the cartoon persuasion will also make an appearance - Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat will be walking around, too.

Don't miss the Smashing Photos booth to capture your fun time.

And tap your toes to the tunes of the Original Jelly Roll Soul.

The evening culminates in a lively live auction of select boutique and collectable wines, gifts, and novel dining and travel experiences. Silent auction will be open during the food and wine tasting.

Tickets to An Evening Uncorked! are a bargain at $85 per person and must be purchased in advance. Proceeds benefit WSBE Rhode Island PBS, to support excellent local television content.

ArtRI: In Plain Sight: Art in Unexpected Places

ArtRI may be in its third season but - just like the subject it embraces and presents - we're given a whole new, fresh perspective. You might even call it a whole new series. It starts Thursday, April 3 at 8 p.m.

With a new format, ArtRI: In Plain Sight: Art in Unexpected Places goes mobile, taking audiences to publicly accessible Providence sites known for something other than their art, but that also offer noteworthy examples of artistic expression.

Spanning three centuries, featured artworks represent various media, including paint, textiles, marble, steel, wood, glass, works on paper, and more. Rhode Island School of Design alumnus Richard Goulis directed and produced the series; Victoria Veh is the creative director.

The four episodes each feature a different host:
April 3:   "DOWNTOWN PROVIDENCE" hosted by Barnaby Evans
April 10:  "FUNERARY ART AND MONUMENTS" hosted by Ronald Onorato
April 17:  "ART IN LIBRARIES" hosted by Tonia Mason and Alison Maxell
April 24:  "BROWN UNIVERSITY AND RISD CAMPUSES" hosted by Jo-Ann Conklin

April 3 @ 8 p.m.:  "DOWNTOWN PROVIDENCE" hosted by Barnaby Evans, multimedia artist and creator of WaterFire Providence
Rebroadcasts on Rhode Island PBS: Saturday, April 4 at half after midnight (12:30 a.m.) and noon; Broadcasts on Learn: Friday, April 18 at 10 p.m., Saturday, April 19 at 5 a.m., Sunday, April 20 at 1:30 a.m.

Barnaby Evans at the RI Convention Center
The city’s downtown core offers significant public art in its park spaces, on city streets, at its civic and convention centers, and sited on buildings.  Discover a sculpture by Daniel Chester French, who also created the Lincoln Memorial, “hiding in place” on Dorrance Street.  In the Rhode Island Convention Center, look up to see a huge glass sculpture hanging overhead, created by renowned architect and MacArthur Fellow James Carpenter.  Uncover a tribute to lasting love in a familiar fountain.  Barnaby Evans, creator of WaterFire and an artist working in many media, shares details about these pieces as he leads our tour

April 10 @ 8 p.m.:  "FUNERARY ART AND MONUMENTS" hosted by Ronald Onorato, Ph.D., professor of art history, University of Rhode Island.
Rebroadcasts on Rhode Island PBS: Saturday, April 12 at half after midnight (12:30 a.m.) and noon; Broadcasts on Learn: Friday, April 18 at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, April 19 at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, April 20 at 2 a.m.
Ronald Onorato at the North Burial Ground
The North Burial Ground and Swan Point Cemetery are two prominent Providence cemeteries exemplifying the artistic riches and tranquil settings to be found in historic cemeteries.  Family memorials honoring the deceased reveal the evolution of a city’s culture and industry. Ronald Onorato, Ph.D., professor of art history and department chair of art and art history at the University of Rhode Island, is a published expert on historic cemeteries.  Onorato shows us extraordinary museum-quality sculpture and architecture “hiding in plain sight” outdoors for all to see.

April 17 @ 8 p.m.:  "ART IN LIBRARIES" hosted by Tonia Mason – director of Marketing & Communications, Providence Public Library; and Alison Maxell - executive director of The Providence Athenaeum
Rebroadcasts on Rhode Island PBS: Saturday, April 19 at half after midnight (12:30 a.m.) and noon; Broadcasts on Learn: Friday, April 25 at 10 p.m., Saturday, April 26 at 5 a.m., Sunday, April 27 at 2 a.m.
Tonia Mason, Providence Public Library

Long-established libraries like the Providence Public Library and the Providence Athenaeum hold much more than books.  The opportunity to explore the art and artifacts in their collections makes visiting a stimulating and worthwhile experience whether or not reading is on a visitor’s agenda.

The Providence Public Library opened its extraordinary building, itself a work of art now on the National Register of
Alison Maxell, Providence Athenaeum
Historic Places, in 1900.  Guided by Tonia Mason, see unusual architectural features of the building en route to viewing remarkable collections of ship models, ancient tablets, illustrated manuscripts, original WWII posters, and more.

The Providence Athenaeum has always been a membership library, but while only members may borrow library materials, anyone is welcome to visit the library and use its holdings on site. The word “athenaeum” simply means an institution for the promotion of learning.  Alison Maxell, executive director, and her staff enthusiastically share the Athenaeum’s wide range of holdings with viewers and visitors, and many Athenaeum programs are open to the public.

April 24 @ 8:00 p.m.:  "BROWN UNIVERSITY AND RISD CAMPUSES" hosted by Jo-Ann Conklin, director, David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University
Rebroadcasts on Rhode Island PBS: Saturday, April 26 at half after midnight (12:30 a.m.) and noon; Broadcasts on Learn: Friday, April 25 at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, April 26 at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, April 27 at 2:30 a.m.
Jo-Ann Conklin, Brown University with Circle Dance by sculptor Tom Friedman
Artwork abounds on the campuses of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.  Gallery director Jo-Ann Conklin takes a walk around College Hill to highlight some of these pieces.  From outdoor sculptures by the internationally prominent Henry Moore and Jenny Holzer to challenging indoor installations by visual artists Sarah Oppenheimer and Diane Samuels, Conklin describes the intriguing features of these works and invites viewers to enjoy them on the campuses.
